3 Post-Workout Power Foods

1.  Protein

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and used for making muscles, bones, and hormones.  During exercise, amino acids are used during the early muscle recovery process to repair muscle fibers.

Therefore, it is important to restore your amino acid supply with protein!  Consuming lean protein sources, such as chicken breast, turkey breast, eggs, tilapia, salmon, and/or whey protein will restore your amino acid supply and facilitate muscle recovery and growth.

2. Carbohydrates

Glycogen is the stored form of sugar and is found in your liver and muscles.  During exercise, glycogen is used as the body's main source of energy.

Therefore, it is important to restore your glycogen stores with carbohydrates!  Consuming carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes, oatmeal, brown rice, or natural granola will restore your glycogen stores and keep you energized.  Furthermore, if you consume these carbohydrates right after a workout, your body will use these carbs primarily for glycogen restoration.  So, what are you burning for energy??  FAT!  Many studies have confirmed that the consumption of post-workout carbs actually increases the body's utilization of fat for energy.  So, don't be afraid of those carbs after your workout, they help you lose fat!  BUT, they must be the RIGHT carbs!  No processed, extra sugary junk!

3.  Green Vegetables

The last power food is green vegetables!  Veggies such as spinach, broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts are great sources of vitamins and minerals that help to reduce muscle cramps, clear the body of free radicals, and increase nutrient uptake throughout the body.

So use these three foods (lean protein, carbohydrates, and green vegetables) to meet those weight loss and fitness goals!
